Integrating new approaches in practice
A significant challenge in healthcare is the often substantial gap between the development of innovative technologies and their integration into clinical practice. The Centre for Personalised Medicine aims to help this gap through better understanding of several issues:
- Public understanding of genetic information- Given that media coverage of developments in genetic technologies can sometimes portray these as providing answers in an of themselves, the CPM plays an important role in highlighting this deterministic discourse
- Diversity in healthcare- given that our understanding to date of genomic variability globally is biased, we explore ways in which personalised approaches can be made accessible and beneficial to diverse populations, including currently underserved groups.
- Insurance implications- whilst the implications for insurance vary per country, we are interested when and how genetic information may be used to influence insurance offers
- Social and political context- The CPM recognises the influence of broader social and [geo]political contexts in the adoption of personalised healthcare approaches, which can both facilitate and hinder progress in the field.

Discussion of off-target and tentative genomic findings may sometimes be necessary to allow evaluation of their clinical significance.
